Paint scratch ( long )

Paint scratch ( long )
I have a wide scratch on the side of my 1997 F - 150 bed. It is about
an eigth of an inch wide and does not penetrate thru the primer.
As such, you see this wide scratch, almost seven feet long on the side of
the bed with gray/white primer showing.
The original color is described as " Bright Red Clearcoat ".
What is the most reasonable way of handling this other than taking it to a shop. Do I have to sand to bare metal or could I paint over the exposed primer. No visible rust is present.
Autozone has recommended a red color pencil sort of paint with a clearcoat as a second application.
Does anyone have any recommendations as to what products are most suitable for this job.
Thanks,
Ken H.

The "best" fix for appearance would be to sand out the scratch and paint the bed side. To prevent rust put the marker thingy on it. It will look horrible though. I would only recommend that as a temporary fix.

What he said... The touchup paint will not match due to the fact your paint will have faded, and they were not mixed at the same time. There will always be a difference.
