P0011, p0174, p0300, p0301, p0302, p0304, p2196
 

I drive a 2004 FX4 with 116,000(ish) miles on it that has had regular maintenance and oil changes from the dealer. After filling the gas tank (from empty) it began bogging down and then lurching forward as well as getting a definite shake/wobble, all issues have been intermittent. This started Saturday, it sat yesterday and this morning the check engine light came on. It threw 7 codes (P0011, P0174, P0300, P0301, P0302, P0304, P2196). From what I understand:

P0011 is a camshaft timing problem
P0174 is a vacuum leak
P0300, P0301, P0302, P0304 are all misfires and could be caused by bad coils or injector issues
P2196 is possibly an O2 sensor?

My questions are: Is this accurate? Where do I start? All the codes appeared at the same time.

I'm not sure if I posted this in the right place, if I didn't I apologize, still learning my way around!

With that many codes, i would check the Fuel Pump module up on the frame under your spare tire. They corrode, and cause driveability issues. Just drop the rear tire and look for it.

Or bad gas, or an unplugged/corroded harness plug.

Start with diag on the very 1st code that is output, the cam sensor can cause all of the other codes because the pcm strategy is sequentially fired fuel injection, when that circuit fails it cause the pcm to use a base engine management limp home mode and fires all injectors all the time.

Once you eliminate the first code drive it until it sets another code and go from there.

Also with the miles you have if it hasn't been done yet, change the spark plugs and don't cheap out, get Motorcraft brand plugs.

Before you go throwing parts at this engine, remove and inspect the PCV system especially the hose. These are a known issue with the 5.4 and will throw all of the above codes. If you find a hole in the bend of the hose or it appears to be cracked or deteriorated, replace with ONLY Motorcraft parts.

Thanks guys! I'm going to be checking the PVC system for leaks as soon as my dad gets home (somebody a little more experienced than myself), and then go from there. I'll post an update after we get done. :thumbsup: Really hoping it is just a leak in the vacuum system causing everything else to be off.

It's true a vacuum leak can cause all but one of those codes, the cam sensor code.

If that code was the first one out of the scanner then that is where you need to start.

That's what Ford taught me any way.
