Oil sending unit or oil pump?

I just started having my oil gauge shoot down ever minute or so. How do I know what is wrong? I have a 2002 f-150.

The oil pump can't drop pressure that fast, and recover. And your truck doesn't actually have a sender - it has a 6psi switch, and a resistor built into the gauge head. Together, they only allow the gauge to show no pressure, or mid-scale. Because the resistor was integrated into the gauge after '95, you can't revert to a sender & make yours work (without also changing the gauge head to an '87-95), so your quickest fix is to simply replace the switch.
