Default Manual transmission inquiries

So I bought a 1997 Ford F-150 with the triton 4.6 and manual transmission. I’m curious as to if any of you guys think I should have the transmission looked at. It only has 85,000 on it, but the transmission is very rough and cumbersome to use so to speak. It clunks when I throw the clutch in, and also when I’m sitting I can hear squeaking coming from under the engine bay when I push the clutch in. Shifting smooth is pretty much impossible, kinda lugs a lot. When it was hot, the clutch would also get super firm, so I changed the fluid and it fixed that. Also, if trying to take off in second while the engine’s at 1000 rpms or below, it makes a grinding sound like crazy.

What did you put in it when you changed the fluid? Should be automatic transmission fluid not gear oil as weird as it sounds. If you put AF in then there's a good chance something inside has worn out.

Could also be a worn clutch disk. Need to take it to someone trained on manual trans to make a proper diagnosis.

Rough engagement is usually due to insufficient clutch release. In the case of that trans, I'm pretty sure it has the hydraulic throw-out bearing and they've been known to be a problem child. Bleed it thoroughly and if there's adequate access, spray the nose of the input housing (where the bearing rides) with brake cleaner. Hose it out good. It gets gummed up with dirt and clutch material which makes it hard for the throw-out to expand. Ultimately, you'll probably just have to replace it. That design, and that transmission (assuming it's the Mazda 5-speed) was not exactly one of Ford's "Better Ideas".
