Luke warm temps at idle, gets hot while driving
2012 Ford F-150 5.0.... so I have gotten this truck new to me about two weeks ago, the water pump was new when I bought it and everything worked great, heating was good etc, until a few days ago where now at idle and coming to a stop driving it will blow Luke warm air on full blast until I speed back up and it will get really hot air This is while still my temp gauge is actually hovering a little below middle towards the cold mark. i kinda figured it would be a bad thermostat so I got coolant and thermostat and new o rings ready to go, had issues with which side the internal o ring went in but I think I got it now (diagram shows o ring on the inside lip and the thermostat sat on top of it but when you tighten down the o ring slips off lip and leaks) After all that and filled bad up with coolant and started up trying to burp etc the temp started to rise but still same issue. a note that the top radiator hose is cool to the touch and isn’t hard, is that normal? And why wouldn’t I actually be having high temps if it’s a clog or a bad reservoir cap? im leaning towards a clogged heater core... any thoughts or suggestions?.... my blender motor and whatnot work great no noise and it blends the temps just fine, it blows cold when on cold and so on so forth. i am also getting bad gas mileage while I understand that gas in winter is not good o drove on highway for 4 hours and got the same gas mileage as when I was in town.. |
How's the temperature of the heater hoses in and out? Since you do not seem to be building up pressure, I would make sure hose connections are tight and change out the cap. If not equiped, I always drill a very small hole in the thermostat to allow any air to pass by and belch out on its own. Respond back with your findings on the heater hoses.
BTW- I never get as good of gas mileage in winter compared to summer. Winter mixes and looong warm up times are to blame. |
The top radiator hose feels soft and never gets hard or hot, but the hose going into the cab or what I assume goes to the heater core is warm. i will try a new cap today as that may be the problem because I drove around and got it up to running temp and I put glasses and glove on knowing the cap would spew off but it let off little pressure and came right off without and issue nothing high pressure. ive checked for leaks and couldn’t find anything. |
Are you sure the thermostat is in the correct way? Try the radiator cap first and see what happens, possible, you still have air in the system

yes my next step is to get a new cap. my coolant temps are getting up to 225 and fans kick in even just driving for about 10-15 mins. I monitored this with forscan the other weird thing is my temp gauge is showing a little less the halfway during that time and doesn’t fluctuate any. |
Another update... the upper radiator hose does indeed get warm now but still the issue with the dash gauge showing colder but temps getting up to 225. |
Ok so update:
I got a new cap, I tried to burp it a little better this time with two cycles of leaving the cap off and letting it cool down then getting it up to "running temp" I had forscan up with live feedback on engine coolant and temp gauge sensor percentage (50%) being the "ideal mark" or where it should stay to run at. My weird issue is that the temp gauge never got over 48% but my coolant temp kept climbing and go up to 215 degrees running on the highway for a short period at 70mph however as soon as I got off highway it cooled back down pretty quickly. So that kinda go me to thinking that I had topped off my tank with e-85... doesnt it make your engine run cooler since its better for warmer ambient temps? so would running e85 in the winter be messing with things since 87 octane runs hotter and would probably get things up to temps quicker or am I in two different departments here? I just found it odd that my temp gauge only got to 48% and no higher even when the temps climbed a little. When I got home from said drive I popped hood and felt upper radiator hose and it was hot and hard....however, when I let it idle in my driveway it never got up to temp for the thermostat to open up, so I guess this mean my thermostat is opening up just at a higher temp? (obviously) so do I have a defective thermostat? |

No not really, I was just concerned is all, this is a new truck to me and I wanted to make sure I was doing things right and things were good with her.
I get a little OCD with my vehicles at times, but wanted to see if anybody else was having these symptoms.... |
Is it normal for temps to reach 225 in the winter? When I drive around town without the defroster on my temps reach about that and rad fans Kick on about 219 and run 100% and pretty loud at that. just didn’t seem that 225 degrees was normal especially in the winter. |
