4x4 is locking in, yet front tires are not spinning
My husband is stuck in our 2005 Fx4 once again.... The 4x4 light is lighting up on the dash, it makes the clicking sound like it is locking in, but the front tires are not spinning. Any suggestions on what to try? We are not really worried about the truck being stuck right now because we can get pulled out, but we don't want this to happen again. Are there some things we can try ourselves before taking it to a mechanic and forking out lots of $$$?

When you are unstuck, check to see if your driveshafts are turning. If so, then possibly your hubs need to be remove, clean, re-grease, reinstall. if that does not fix them. replace them. If your driveshafts are not turning, there is a "box" attach to the tranny you can remove to inspect whether your switch is working correctly. This is what i had to do on my 95 f150.

it could be in the transfer case or the front locking hubs.I think yours should have locking hubs because my 05 xlt has them. when you are locked in 4x4 if you can turn the cv shafts it is probably in the transfer case if you cant turn them, then more likely it is the automatic locking hubs. hope this helps.

could be a vacume line too i had this problem on my ranger where it would engage into 4wd for afew then without realizing it the front wheels would disengage but the light would still be on!!
