Flickering lights after truck is off, ignition problem.
Hello,
I have a new to me 2000 F150XLT ExtCab 4x4 auto. I have had it for just over a month.
It would start every time no problem first try. I went away (just over a week), came back and the NEW battery was dead. I boosted the truck and it started with not issues. Drove around, stopped the truck started it and got back home. When to go out a couple hours later and turned the key,the starter sounded great, but the engine will not turn over. Eventually, and randonmly (shaking the battery wires, moving ther truck back in neutral, doing whatever...) it starts.
Symptoms before going away:
- The truck would tick/click intermitently after turning off the truck and continue even after removing the keys. WOULD not tick or click when truck was runnning. (this has not happened in a couple weeks).
- Odomoter light would dim and brighten intermitently while the truck was running. (still does intermitently)
Since being back:
- When I turn the ignition off, The "theft" light blinks but not in the normal pattern as it did before, it is more random. As well the odomoter light flickers wildely and speratacly showing dots all across.
- When I turn off the truck and remove the keys, the heater will still blow until I turn off the heater. It will not turn back on again (if keys remain out).
I have started disconecting my battery, fearing that all this activity after tunring off the truck drains the new battery over some time and reconecting it when I go to start it. The starter is still making a healthy sound to try and turn the engine, the battery is new, and the alternator (relitevely new) will run the truck once it turns over. The voltage gage remains steady in the middle while driving and I do not seem to have any electriacal issues wuile driving except the intermitent diming odomoter light.
Now, I have read of possible faulty battery wires and this seems to make some sence as one of the connector seems to have tape on it and has a loose connection to the battery. The previous owner has gerry rigged the connecting negative wire clamp with an additional screw to help keep the cable on the battery.
Does this seem like a possibility? What else could it be? Any advise would be appreciated.
What is envolved with changing the positive/negative battery wires?
Cheers,
JP
