Question exhaust system for 2001 f150

Does anyone know what a metal cylinder type can, that may weigh several pounds attached to the exhaust pipe does? Mine is loose and it rattles. I am thinking about cutting it off and remounting it?

It is attached to the 2 1/2 " pipe below the front seat or back seat. I went to a Napa dealer in town, and a gentleman informed me that Ford place the weighted closed canister to stop vibration of the exhaust system. I was going to wedge it between two clamps but the pipe hanger attached to it was severely rusted. I have cut it off.
