Default ewb needs 911 help

New to the forum in serious need of some assistance.

I have a 2001 5.4 Super Crew XLT 4x4 that i have been battling for the last 2 months. it has 168,000 miles. whats new: intake manifold, Idle control valve, Throttle position sensor, Diff. Pressure valve, all 8 coil packs, both O2 sensors, Temp sending unit.

What the problem is , the temp guage will show normal running temp and then suddenly (violently) goto max hot and the truck will go into safe mode. it has done this with the truck on the computer and the sending unit is showing the engine at 180-205 degrees, but the guage is pegged out hot.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have attempted to change guage clusters but the one I recovered from the salvage yard wold not respond and couldn't be programmed to the truck.

ECU should read the engine coolant temp from the sending unit...not the gauge on the cluster. you may have an ECU problem.

That's what my thought would be but the cluster will read super hot while the diagnostic computer read a normal temp. I've been told that the guage cluster will also flag the computer and make the truck go into safe mode.

Ok a little additional information. Went out today to see what would happen and turned the key to the "on" position and the temp gage initially read "hot" and then went to the "safe mode" position. This is without the truck running and it has not been ran for the last 2 days. Outside temp is close to 90 degrees and the truck has been closed up.

Do a search on web for "2001 f150 false temperature sensor". There are lots of people with same problem.
