I had a full time whine which changed pitch with engine speed and it turned out to be my belt tensioner pulley. Easy fix. Cheap too. Check that before replacing your alternator.

This thread looks like it's been around for quite a while. Not sure my wrinkle is a new one but I don't see anyone with the same type issue.
I've owned the truck for two years now.
I'm sure everyone remembers the pan flute that was "so popular" for about a week.
When cruising down the road and various highway speeds. I get a whistling sound like someone blowing one note on a pan flute.
This noise seems to be coming from the area around the windshield defrost vents. It usually starts at around 50 mph or so and is intermittent. As the speed increases the sound becomes more consistent. However, the speed at which the sound starts, varies and it doesn't do it all the time. I even took a service writer from a Ford Truck dealership on a ride, and of course the truck wouldn't make the sound.
Today I drove at varying speeds, regular highway and even on the turnpike doing 85 and I always had the sound to some degree.
here's the weird part. Today, at lower speeds, I had one "note" and as I accelerated (slowly) and increased my speed, at a certain speed, I began to have a second "note" simultaneously for a split second along with the first one. Then the second one became dominant and I couldn't hear the first one.
I'm planning a trip to Florida soon and I really don't want the accompaniment. I'd appreciate any real help here.
By the way, I recorded the sound in case anyone wants to hear it. this is NOT a whine or a hum. It is a whistle. Sounds like someone blowing a coke bottle.

Did You have Your front window replaced, or the trim messed with? At the shop I work at, We have about 30 vans. If they change the front glass about 50% of the time the van will whistle or have a rattle at 50+mph. A lot of the time the fix is pressing the trim all around the window. It can be a small area that is loose to make the noise.

I haven't had any of the glass replaced in the two years that I've had it but I've had the whistle the entire time so it is possible that it was done. CarFax did not show that the truck had been wrecked but I guess the windshield could have been replaced at some point. I'll look for the original glass decal.
I'll also check for look trim or trim that isn't pushed in all the way. Thanks

Hello All, I have a similar issue with a squealing / metal scraping sound in my 02 supercrew 5.4L. The noise only exist when I rev up the engine past 2500 rpm. It started after 3000 rpm a month ago and now does it at a lower rpm. it can only be heard from inside the cab by the transmission hump near the passenger side. I have replaced the torque converter, then the front Transmission pump, then heard it could be caused from a bad cat, so replaced the entire exhaust with headers and high flow cats. Still have the annoying sound. Could use some good suggestions for this. I have done a lot of research and still no clue.
I was thinking maybe a bad CAM bearing at the rear of the engine.
Another possibility is the flywheel, (but when I examined it, found no issues).
Really getting frustrated and stumped. Definitely not from the front of the engine.
Stethoscope only dictates around the bell housing???

Any ideas.

Default He was right

Well, I finally found the source of the noise.
73fxe was right. Turns out, the windshield was replaced at some point before I bought the truck.
Found the after-market sticker.
Eventually I went to my mechanic and took him for a test drive. Of course, for the first 10 minutes, NO NOISE., then it started very quietly but within a few minutes it was going full blast.
The source of the noise is either the trim or the sealant around the top of the windshield. I still need to take it to a glass shop and have them removed, clean and reinstall the windshield or replace it if it breaks while the attempt to remove it.
I can't believe I've put up with this for two years. Arghhh. Well, anyway, thanks for all your ideas.
