Default engine rattle

i didnt change my air filter for a long time and i think it might have cause the engine to rattle. it only happens when the truck first starts and its not consistent at all. it rattles most when i stop at the first intersection or the first time im in reverse. the rattle comes from the brace the pulls the engine out, driver side. the one that goes over one of the exhaust manifolds. could my exhaust be the problem? should a run catalytic cleaner through the gas?

view from the side. i also have a bad oil leak behind that brace, coming from some kind of plug. its not from the spark plug wires but its close to it. looks to be plugged into the same part, in the engine, as the spark plugs. i just had an oil change and switched over to full synthetic, i have read leaks happen after this. i am now thinking about going back to non synthetic. i just put in Gold Eagle no leak, said would stop leaks in the next 200 miles. after that im changing the oil. should i run motor medic through it too?

Engine rattles at startup are usually lifters that aren't pumped up with oil. Once the oil pressure builds up it quits. If you have over 100K miles on the truck, go back to conventional "high mileage oil". Yes putting synthetic oil in an old engine is a bad idea. The damage may already be done to seals. Good luck.

While high mileage oils are never a bad idea in my opinion the idea that synthetic is bad for a higher mileage engine is garbage. They dont hurt seals, if you develop a leak its because there was likely sludge blocking the leak and it was cleaned away. I have been running synthetic oil for 55k miles and no leaks yet and I made the switch at 120k.

I suggest Mobil 1 High Mileage. It will clean any sludge or varnish accumulation in hydraulic systems, that often cause rattles, and condition old seals.

By the way it was the mechanic who put in fully synthetic and to top it off put the wrong weight oil. He used a more expensive 10w20 Castrol Edge, instead of 5w20 C E, which he had to end up giving me for a refund. I'm going to put in maxlife vavoline part synthetic after I use some motormedic by gunk. I always used vavoline before

So yes that's three oil changes and two filter changes. Second filter I'll put in after I use motormedic

Oil additives can be dangerous. ..or at the very least a waste of money unless you know what your doin and know additives. Just because something is on the shelf doesn't mean it works or that its safe.
Do a little research before dumping stuff in your engine.

ok no additives were put in. i used motorkote and i did not use motormedic. the second oil change was still dirty. i might do it a third time after a months time or so, and use mobil one full synthetic. my dad wants to put lucas transmission slip stop in his truck, he has no clue what hes doing tho. do you think lucas is a bad additive?

Could the down pipe be loose? The heat could cause it to expand and seal after running for a bit, stopping the rattle.
