Electric power steering problem
 
Hi everyone,

I have a 2013 F150, 4wd, supercrew with 69k mi that needs the electric power steering replaced. As you probably know, this is not covered by the power train warranty. Dealer wants $1950 for the work but I'm taking it elsewhere (non Ford dealer) to get it fixed for about half as much.

I am wondering just how reliable the eps is. Do they really go bad after just 69k mi? I have had a number of repairs for the vehicle since I purchased it certified 15 mos ago. A couple of engine coolant leak that has various hoses replaced. There's also a couple of engine oil leak due to housing/cover gaskets faults. And now this. I had planned to keep this truck for a long time but don't know how much more repairs I can tolerate. With the eps replacement at a non dealer shop, the repairs have added to close to $2k with numerous drop off at the shop. Should I get rid of it? Trade it for another one? Love to get your feedback. Some members on here have had trouble with them some not. I can tell you the dealer where i work we have sold a couple but would i call it a widespread issue? Hell no

My 2015 XLT failed at 72K, went completely out on the way home while making a right turn. dang near hit the car next to me. Mine was replaced under my ESP, only cost was my deductible. Servcie guy showed me the service ticket, was just at $2300.00

Thanks for the response. The dealer would not cover mine under ESP. They said that power train warranty does not include it. Called national Ford to reconsider but they will not budge. Very frustrating!

What ESP did you buy? I have the Ford premium care and it is indeed listed as a warrantable item.

judging from the OP, he got the truck as a CPO, so unless he purchased additional he only got the CPO version of ESP

Yes, I just have CPO version of ESP. I didn't realize that there is a higher level of ESP and looking back, wish I had bought it.

The non dealer shop checked and identified the intermediate shaft as the issue, not the epas. The symptom of the problem is that when I turn the steering wheel, there would be some tough spots and that it would be easy again causing me to oversteer at times. Also, the steering wheel doesn't return to center at all. I heard no noise and there was never any lights/warning on the dash console. He confirmed these symptoms and also checked that the epas computer is not returning any code/fault. Total repair cost would $398 instead of the $2100 the Ford dealer quoted. Does this sound plausible? Is this issue easy to misdiagnose? Even by a Ford dealer?

Ford really makes it hard to be loyal to them. I am convinced now that if you're buying an F-150, you HAVE to get the extended service plan. Just consider it as part of the purchase price. It's really unfortunate because I love the F-150s but I can't afford to keep up with all the repairs and their dealers make costly mistakes, incompetent or just plain dishonest.
