good post

as a side - I've done my own since I've been driving (33 years now) - including a lot of my friends - always used Fram, never had a problem. Oil filters are pretty much all good these days -I'm pretty sure a mfr wouldn't market a product as essential as an oil filter and it be inferior...but to each his own.

Thanks for the post DIY. I just recently started doing my own oil change, because I can get under my truck pretty easy without jacks. Is it just preference to take off the filter first? I usually drain the oil pan first than do the filter.

yeah, pan, then filter.
I usually take off the oil fill cap too to allow any back pressure that may occur to get all the oil out I can...then back in with the plug, then filter...fill er up!

PS: the filter only needs 1/4 turn (by hand), after you snug it to the case....my first oil change with my truck, whoever put that filter on needs to be shot with a spear-gun - I had to pry mine off by hammering a screwdriver sideways through the casing and twisting it out 1" at a time. The filter should be able to be removed by hand, just like installation.

Ford thinks differently:

Special service messages
21049 1997-2010 multiple vehicle - 4.6l/5.4l - engine ticking and/or rattle noise
multiple vehicle lines with 4.6l or 5.4l engine may experience an engine ticking or rattle noise that sounds like a stuck tappet (hla). This
may be due to the deterioration of an aftermarket oil filter. Vehicles with this condition have low oil pressure at one cylinder head
only, while main pressures are normal. Dislodged material from the aftermarket oil filter blocks the cam cap oil passage, either at
cylinder #4 (right bank rear) or cylinder #5 (left bank front). For vct equipped engines, inspect the vct valve body and the oil passages
under the first cam cap. Damage to engines caused by aftermarket oil filters are not covered under warranty.

I had this condition with a motorcraft filter. Went to a Wix and the problem was cured. don't know if I had a faulty motorcraft filter or what but i'll never use another one.

Ford don't live in the real world either...

And what 'filter(s)' are they referring to?

Also we did it out side (thank god) and i only filled the oil filter a little as the threads for it are almost horizontal,

To stop that from happening all you have to do is pull the oil level stick or remove the oil fill cap. I do both. This way are will come from the top.

You would just spill oil every where. Plus it doesnt just go in that easy. There is a wire/cord in the way as well as a pully right above. At least for me it took a couple trys until it actually caught the threads.
Fill it up with 75w90, it wont spill!!!!
