Default Distributor Gear Fell Off During Removal

How do I get the gear out? During removal of the distributor it fell off. I was warned to be careful, that might happen, but I was not told how to be careful. Help. I don't know what to do.

Oh, sorry. It is a 1984 F150 4x4 with 4.9L inline 6.

Should be able to retrieve it with a long magnet.

if magnet does not work maybe you could try to hook it out with a coat hanger or maybe some sort of O-ring or dental tool

Every one I ever took out had a roll pin holding the gear on, was yours missing or broke?

I'll try the magnet. I love Harbor Freight. Thanks. If that doesn't work I will try a coat hangar.

I am not sure about the roll pin. It does not look like anything is broken about the shaft. It is hexagon shaped and I assume mates with a hexagon shaped hole in a gear. All I see is the shaft. I hope the gear is in the hole and retrievable.

No, the hex is the oil pump driveshaft. The gear is pressed & pinned to the distributor. Click this & read the caption:

Oh wow. Mine does not have any of that on it. I need to take a closer look.

The pin is missing and the gear. I guess it is in that hole. Will it be retrievable with the magnet?

Amazon Amazon
