Question CHT or ECT, I don't know

I have a 2016 F-150 2.7 l Ecoboost. I stopped at the store on my way home from work and came out to my radiator fan running full speed. (I leave my truck running usually when i go in to the store quick, I love the keypad) Any how, I get it, my truck is in safe mode, screen reads Engine Coolant Overtemperature and temp gauge is buried in the red. I limp it home (about a 1/4 mile) and shut it off. No leaks noticable anywhere. I even popped the coolant resevoir cap and it was fine. Let it sit over night about 12 hours, came back out and just turned the ignition to the on position. It was still giving me the Engine coolant overtemp and my gauge was still buried in the red. It has to be a sensor, but which one i dont know. I'm guessing its either the Cylinder Head Temp sensor or the Engine Coolant Temp sensor. Any ideas?

Pretty sure they use a CHT now where in the past it was the ECT.

Disconnect the battery, and retest. The temp will go back to normal, now find out why..

The 2016 3.5L uses a CHT only. Engine coolant temperature is derived from the CHT signal. If it does not appear to be a real overheating issue then it is likely a sensor failure. They do fail and Ford recommends replacing it anytime it is removed. If the sensor failed and the PCM thinks the temperature has maximized, the gauge pins and the system goes into limp mode. Have you checked the DTCs? The CHT is at the back of the PS cylinder head.

My truck was down for 8 days. It did end up being the CHT. I used an online mechanic called JustAnswer. I think I cheated em a bit. It was $1 for a 7 day trial, all I needed was a schematic of my engine to locate the CHT. Once I got the print I cancled it. The CHT on my 2016 2.7 l Ecoboost is located on the driver side of the engine. I kept looking at the back passenger and could never find it. The part was $32 and I had to buy a code reader to clear the fault, that another $42. So in all only a $74 fix, way cheaper than any mechanic would have charged me.

My bad. The 3.5L EcoBoost is on the PS.

I had my truck die on me on the highway again. 2.7L ecoboost. I grabbed one of these sensors and need to swap it out. Debating if I should send it to a mechanic or do it myself. 86,000kms on the truck, warranty expired 5th of May 2021.

book says almost 6hr job. Is there an easier way to change it without pulling the upper and lower intakes?

Excellent video. Yes this is the sensor that went on my truck. There are two different ones on the 2.7. One as depicted in the video (easy) and one that is under both the upper and lower intakes (hard)

my symptoms were the truck would flash up “coolant over temp” and the truck would go into limp home mode. The engine fan would kick on full high as well.

swapping the sensor just below cylinder 2s head/coil (driver side) was the fix. Erased the code with a 40$ Reader from Canadian Tire.
