Changing radiators on a '96
Does anyone have any experience changing out a radiator in a 1996 or similar year model F-150? I blew mine over the weekend, probably because of a bad head gasket. I would like to save myself some money by changing out the radiator at home if I can, because there is no doubt in my mind that having the head gasket replaced is going to be pricy. I was thinking about changing out the heads to some edelbrock performers while I was having the work done...
I guess a good follow-up is: how difficult is it to change he heads and head gasket on a '96 F-150? I am not a very experience mechanic, but I do have common sense, and I can follow directions.

the radiator is not that hard to do. will be a little tight i think to get the radiator out with out taking the fan clutch off but can be done.
i think the tools you will need are 8mm socket, 10or13 mm socket, pliers to remove hose clamps if spring type. and i think thats about it.
as far as head gaskets. common sense helps. i would suggest either getting a repair manual at an auto parts store or just getting the alldata diy subscription. it is only $27 for a year. read up and see if it is something you think you can handle.
i have never used the diy version but i use the pro version every day and like it.
do you have a good supply of tools?
i wouldnt bother with the edelbrock heads unless you want to modify more for more power. just a waste imo.

The radiator should be fairly easy to remove. Fan shroud and top plastic are attached mostly with plastic push pins. Don't forget to remove the trans cooling lines at the bottom and the recovery lines on top. Also look to be sure the A/C condenser is not attached with any clips to the radiator if you have A/C.
The head gaskets should take you 3 to 5 days tops and $350 in materials. If you have over 150K on the engine take the heads to a shop have a valve job done ($300 to $500).
