Default A/C issue

Having an issue with my a/c randomly switching from cool to hot air.

I wanted to pass the symptoms by this forum to see if there is any consensus:

1. the freon levels are fine
2. the ducts seem to be fine
3. the air is cool, but never really cold
4. there is usually (but not always) a 'thunk' noise when the air switches to hot
5.quick acceleration will often trigger it
6.it seems to happen more often in hotter weather

my mechanic suspects it is the blend door, but cannot be certain if it is the door itself or the actuator w/o spending some time on it - he estimated $1K to fix it, which ain't gonna happen, so I want to take a stab at it myself - I've been told it shouldn't be difficult, but will be long and tedious if it is the door rather than the actuator because I'll have to remove the dash.

note: I don't have a lot of experience doing DIY on my truck, especially something of this caliber, so if you can point me to any comprehensive guides/manuals that don't assume I already know how to do certain steps, it would be greatly appreciated

also, I've seen a couple people on youtube opt to cut a whole through the back of the glove compartment - I am not willing to do that

From what I have read don't quote me it is either cut a hole or remove the dash take your pick.

Ty520,
Some of your ailments -3, 4, 5, & 6, indicate a vacuum issue. Damper controls are vacuum operated. Check your vacuum system over thoroughly and correct the issues. There are numerous write-ups on the vacuum systems/lines and routings on this forum. It may seem intimidating but when you get started, the system will stand out from the wiring and plumbing systems.

thanks for all the responses.

After exploring all the potentially easy fixes, I've decided to live with it. Not going to spend $1K+ or 10+ hours of my life on this thing
