A/C Clutch Hub Replacment?
My A/C will clutch in after aprox 5 min of driving. Once it is in I have cold air and no problems till I stop the vehicle and park it. A few times the A/C recirc light has gone off by itself and you press it and all is ok.
I can't hear any rattle or see any wobble. I have checked freon, 35PSI when running cold air and compressor clutched in. I saw somewhere that it could be a worn clutch hub. Can that be removed once the bolt is removed? Do I need a puller? I know to remove the entire clutch you need a puller and it is said the compressor needs to be removed from the vehicle for that. In which case I will send to the shop. 2008 STX with the V-8. |
I just replace my A/C clutch on an older Explorer (same as a late model F-150). After pulling the belt, I simply removed the center bolt and the outer faceplate came off. This exposed the pulley/electromagnet which was removed with a large snap ring. It did not break the the compressor seal and lose freon. All that said.....it sound more like your pressure switch may be bad. It's designed to operate @ 24 to 36 psi (confirm your year's pressure). That will require evacuation and a recharge if it needs to be replaced. You can test it by pulling the plug and jumping the connection on the wires. If the clutch engages it's a bad switch. Good luck

One of my coworkers spoke with his cousin who is a Ford Mech at a dealership. He claimed that the compressor had to be removed to be able to use a puller on the clutch coil assy. I don't know.
But as to my problem, I did some further troubleshooting and clutch relay under the hood behind the drivers light (on the sidewall ) needed was intermittent. Actually failed open yesterday at lunch. andre |
