Default 3.5 EcoBoost Engine Clatter

I ahe a 2012 F-150 Platinum 4WD with 217,000 miles on it. Runs GREAT, doesn't burn oil, and paid for...I would like to keep and keep driving it!

I've had a clatter on cold start up for a while that dies down after a few seconds, and am told this is caused by an issue with the cam phasers, which is an expensive repair. I've been told it doesn't hurt anything and will not cause long-term damage, other than just clattering for those few seconds on a cold start.

I also was told today that my turbos are making noise as well; another expensive repair...

How long can I go on each issue without doing further damage?

Any input on this would be much appreciated!

totally depends on how much you drive the truck and how often you change your oil. it could run another five years like that are start giving you serious issues within the next six months. it were me id start planning on a new truck rather than put money into one starting to show its age.

Take it to a couple good shops and see what those guys think. (Just to be assured the situation is what you are being told).

If the engine can pass a leak down test I would make repairs and keep on trucking. If I had to pay labor costs I’d weight out replacing the vehicle though.

Depends on the cause of the clatter.

It’s doubtful to be phasers. If the timing chain guides are going (not at all unlikely at that mileage), that’s a chain trying to knock its way out of the timing cover.

Would you chance that and does that sound harmless?

No telling with the turbos, but same idea. Gotta figure out what’s whining first.
