Greetings group.

Who uses diesel engine oil in their gas truck?

I've been running 5w-20 Advanced Full Synthetic Mobile one since 75k.
Currently at 105k and this is my daily driver.

Would running a 5w-20 full synthetic diesel engine oil offer better wear protection than the mobile one?

Why or why not?

What's wrong with the mobile 1 ?

@mckayg

I’d keep running what you’ve been running (or 5w30) and just make sure you change it often (no more then 5k miles). Sludge is a killer of that engine.

I’ve never seen a 5w20 diesel oil. Wonder who makes it and what uses it?

I haven't in my truck but I once had a 1988 Mercedes-Benz that I used to run Diesel-rated synthetic multigrade oil in exclusively. My reason for doing so was for the higher levels of zinc as a wear lubricant. I did 188k miles on that engine. Oil was AMSOIL.

Running 5w 30 here helps with the cam phasers.

My mechanic suggested abandoning 5w-20 and run a straight 30 weight all-year-around.

Any thoughts?

I live in Pittsburgh, Not hot in Summer (compared to SW USA) and not cold (5 above is a cold day)

Rotella T6 makes a 5w-30 diesel engine oil that is also rated for gasoline engines. $55/gallon at my Independent Autoparts store. Or $30/gallon from Amazon

Next oil change I'll switch over to T6. And at the 3,000 mile mark take a pint sample for examination and analysis.

are you trying to extend your OCI beyond 12k now?

how much does it cost you to send out a pint every 3k for analysis?

2010 5.4L 3 v with Amsoil EA011 filter and Mobile One Advanced Full Synthetic.
I've been changing my oil at 12k intervals the last two years.

105k and rolling.
