I posted a grenaded engine that was on this page. Failed filter that sent bits of filter paper through the oiling system, starved it of oil and it wrecked a 5.0. Most are just tears though. One guy had a failed filter on his 3.5 ecoboost onug is his username. He did a used oil analysis and nothing was out of the ordinary. So it depends on how bad it rips, how long it’s in use and many other factors. I just refuse to use them after all the ones I’ve cut open and all the other reports. There is a lot of them! Much better filters are out there that do the job better.

Additves are not a good metric of an oil’s ability to protect an engine, that is why API limits the additives and tests the end result. Else all one would have to do is say, “use these additives to meet our requirements.” Also why no reputable performance specification says anything about “synthetic.”

When the quantity of additives is restricted the quality of the base oil must be improved to meet performance standards. This is where a skilled engineer can use synthetic techniques to make up the difference. But just because the synthetic label is no assurance that a skilled engineer was involved.
