2018 5.0 V8 Oil Consumption - Have you checked lately?
Hello,
I've got about 4500 miles on my new truck thus far and this past weekend decided to take a look at the oil level. To my dismay, the dipstick was dry
It appears that I was down 2qts or so. No warning indicator lights anywhere. One would think being down more than a quart would trigger a warning.
Anyone else have a motor consuming oil at fairly quick rate? Maybe it wasn't filled up properly at the factory in the first place? Dunno.
My 2013 Mustang 5.0 would drink about a half quart every few weeks or so but I beat on it a good bit. This 2018 has been treated kindly, so far, but seems to be set on drinking even more oil. Hopefully its just the new motor working itself in and usage will normalize at some point.

My 5.0 appeared to drink through 2.5 liters between 0 and 4000km, although Im willing to bet it was a little low from the factory....and yep, my fault for not checking when I brought it home.....now at just over 5200km (3000mi) consumption hasn’t slowed, it stopped. Hasn’t used a noticeable drop in 1200km. I’ll still have it noted on the first dealer service WO next month.
Yeah, it was a bit freaky but as I get older I guess I’m a little more laid back....figured if it didn’t slow down that’s a job for the warranty lol

Take that truck out onto a freeway where you can open it up a few times. You might get lucky and get the rings seated before the cylinders glaze and end up with an oil burner.
You have a power train warranty.

My 2013 5.0 does not use any oil between oil changes of about 5000 miles. The exception is that it will use about 1/2 quart when towing that distance. This with about 47,000 miles on it.

2018 with 25,000 miles. Used 1/2 quart over last 5000 miles. Oil life still says close to 50%, going to change soon. I noticed it was low before I changed it last time and thought I may not have filled it completely. I don't notice any smell or smoke and tail pipe is mostly clean. Glad to have the extended warranty.

If it makes you feel better, my 5.0 in my Mustang started life with a great thirst for oil but as I approached 20,000 miles the consumption decreased greatly. I'd say about a quart in 5000 at first which translated into fractions of a quart over a whole oil change by the time it had over 20,000 miles.

Engine oil specs changed for everyone starting in 2017 with low viscosity motor oils to improve fuel economy. The flip side is that the manufacturers had to redesign their engines to work with these new oils. Apparently Ford has some problems with design engineering or production engineering and naturally they are going to be extremely slow to admit they have a problem. I remember when Ford kept selling Pintos with the bad gas caps and Crown Vics with the exploding gas tanks to customers having decided that the lawsuits would cost them less than to fix the problems at the factory. GM is doing this with regard to the defective Takata airbag injectors, hoping that the cars are scrapped before they are in an accident and kill the occupants.

I brought a new 2018 5.0 home this past weekend. I've been babying it. Should I give it a harder time to seat the rings?
I checked this morning and my oil was right at max fill line. I'll keep an eye on it.
Think this has something to do with the new block design? The older 5.0s had sleeves right?
