2017 F-150 grinding noise
#31
I'm finally getting my truck in on Friday for both the grinding and the chirping at idle. The grinding piece is my biggest concern, my noise doesn't go away with flipping 4x4 on or off at speed or at a stand still so we'll see.

Guys, a little trouble shooting on your own can solve the problem.
Go to my thread; http://www.f150forum.com/f2/gen-ii-3...c-pump-397377/
Read the WHOLE thing. Unless the dealer can replicate the sound, they're not going to do anything. I taught my dealer a couple things by my own trouble shooting, and replacing the checkvalve. Since, they reimbursed me the $14 +/- I spent at the dealer for parts.
Check the link I provided in my thread to Amazon, NEVER MIND it says it doesn't fit a '17, I'm telling you it does. This was a simple fix.
I'm not going to say this will fix all problems, you could still have a bad solenoid valve, a leaky actuator, a busted hose. But I will say, the base problem has to do with vacuum. There's only a handful of things that could cause loss of vacuum. The mere act of accelerating drops vacuum, hence the checkvalves job.
There are any number of videos on utube, pick your poison.
It would be interesting to find out how many parts and $$$$$$ are tossed by the dealers to find and remedy this all too common problem that can be found by listening to the customer, and really, knowledge and trouble shooting.

2018 3.5 doing same thing after 2 weeks:
That does sound like what I had, and I got a chuckle out of when you tried to hit the gas, but of course it didn't do it the one time you are recording it. Same crap happens to me all the time.
Well it's only been 1 full day since I've gotten it back but still no noise as of yet. Here are the things they replaced according to my receipt:
Module - Transfer Shift CH (qty 1)
Shaft - Front Axle G (qty 1)
Actuator Asy (qty 2)
Hub Asy - Wheel (qty 1)
Tube - Vacuum (qty 1)
I'm not sure if other dealers can lookup this or not, but just in case here is the R/O number for this job from Anderson Ford Grand Island. R/O 26310109/1
I won't call it a success until I go at least a full week or two (or more) without it happening. After a month I will feel very confident it's fixed.
And Sickqk: The side they replaced was my drivers side, which did seem to be where the sound was loudest when I had my windows down and was trying to locate it.

Any luck?
Dajohu,
Any luck with resolving the grind noise issue?
My truck has been doing the exact same thing. Glad you caught it on video. Same year and specs as your truck...hopefully you were able to correct but, please let me know!
thanks!

This sounds different to my ears, but I do have my windows down in my video which makes it sound much louder and quite different. I had no idea how loud it was until i rolled them down.
When it does it, it has always been a cold start, and not made the sound until about 1 mile of driving down my slow road and I pull out into the main street (I noticed it starts with wheels turning as well). However mine seems to do it even in straight driving after that, AND it only does it when hitting the gas pedal, I take foot off gas and it goes away every time. Makes it hard to get anywhere though.

Any opinions if mine could be the same thing or no? Dealership looked at it and thought it was just a rock between brakes and backplate the first time.

Mine did it again today before I took it into dealership. As soon as it made the noise I put it in 4H and as soon as it switched the noise stopped completely. I put it back in 2H and a few mins later it came back, did the same thing and again it went away. I am guessing everyone is right its the front hub mechanism partially engaged.
The only thing that seemed unique to my circumstance is the fact it only ever makes noise when pressing the gas. I never found anyone else that mentioned it. It's cut and dry, as soon as I let go of the gas pedal the noise stops, also now I know as soon as I engage 4WD it stops as well.

Mine ended up being a vacuum leak. The Front Passenger Side vac hose had came lose....prob due to the lift on mine, but there is no real connector....it just slips down over it, so now it hadn't done it in like 2 months....and then yesterday I'm turning hard left into a parking spot and I thought I heard it grind just for a second. Then at home, I live on a steep hill and when I park the front suspension is not level so when I hit that bump it did it again. I checked the vac line and it was connected, but wasn't seated all the way in, since it's a slip fitting it has some major play in it. So it can look like it's connected, but if it's not seated all the way down, you're going to have that issue. Tested it out since re-seating, and haven't heard it grind yet. I'm thinking it's possible that alot of the problems posted on these recent model grindings are from a faulty design on the vac system.

Exactly what I’m having
Every time I touch the throttle it seems I hear that cursed noise 😂. When I turn right I hear it faintly but it’s mostly when I’m driving and first touch the throttle. It will happen for a couple seconds sometimes! But I can’t figure out if anyone has a resolution for it.
