Default 1986 f 150 transmission

my 86 f150 4x4 has a t on the door panel which references to a AOD/AOT TYPE TRANSMIsson i cant find a vacumn line anywhere all i see is four wires coming out of drivers side of transmission does any one know where these four wires go or does this trans work off vacuum or can i switch from wires to vacumn any help would be appreciated.

maybe i should have been giving more details i pulled the orignal 302 motor which had been converted from efi to a edlebrock four barrel carb system and installed a 351 windsor motor which i removed the efi and put a new 4 barrel intake and the edlebrock carb back on i have a transmission kickdown cable and four wires comming off the transmission need to know where these wires go truck moves but does not shift also can this transmission be converted to a vacuumn type by changing the valve body

You have an AOD trans, it operates via pc control and a throttle valve cable attached to the butterfly linkage. No vacuum control. If you are having shift concerns check the cable didn't come loose because of a deteriorated grommet where it attaches. Hopefully you didn't drive it far with that cable off.

It's not a kick down cable, it changes throttle valve (line pressure). When the grommet deteriorates the cable falls out and pressure drops to practically 0 and will fry the clutch packs. The PCM controls shift solenoids inside the valve body but that cable dictates pressure.

1986 probably had no PCM control. Its all on the Detent cable. You are ABSOLUTLY correct about the grommets deteriorating. It will eat up a transmission quick when that happens too. Fix it soon or you will be eating a transmission rebuilt. The AOD is a great transmission. We run one in the race car.

Yeah I think it was the AODE that used the shift solenoids. Been a while since I messed with either.

You are correct. I think that started in the 90's. If the detent cable is connected its just time for a rebuild. BTW you can get new grommets through Dorman/Help section in most parts stores.

2 of the wires are for the reverse light switch, can't remember off hand what the other 2 are for but they have nothing to do with shifting, since you changed the manifold and fuel system over to carb you will need to find an adapter kit for the T.V. cable, I know they use to sell them because a friend converted his. That cable is critical for the transmission to work. Best bet is to find someone local to install and adjust it because if not you will cook the trans if it's not already. They will have to hook up a line pressure gauge in order to determine it's set right.

I remember changing them by the handful under recall when I worked at Ford, they replaced them with a brass bushing and hair pin clip.
