Default Poor Gas mileage 91 4.9 f150

I'm not sure what others really get on this motor but here's what I have noticed. 13 city 15 hwy. This is running with a feather foot, not hauling anything or towing. The truck runs very well and this is why it surprises me. I have read on other sites an average of 18 hwy and as much as 21?? Either way I wonder what I can do to it to get better mpg? Any ideas?
Recent service was air filter, oil change and oil filter. Haven't done pugs yet but i assume they aren't the culprit as it fires right up and doesn't sputter etc..Any input would be greaty accepted!

I took a look at my codes and got these:
636, 327,328,332,542,634. Now keep in mind I was outside the truck for the first ones and wasn't able to push the brake etc. But the 327,328,and 332 are related to the EGR. the 542 may be because my rear tank in not hooked up for some reason. Could the egr then be causing me to get 15 MPG hwy?

The EGR not working properly isn't helping gas mileage.

OK not sure what I did but after dinking with the vacuum lines and taking the egr off and cleaning etc...now when I do the test the thing moves during the test. Also after driving for about 30 miles after having had the neg removed from the battery..it's bring up no egr codes..One thing I did notice, went to change the plugs to motocraft platimum and all the plugs were rusted into place. Got them out but the last 2 near the firewall weren't even more than finger tight?? So I guess I'll take a look at MPG after that whole Rott!

Yea, check those two loose ones again in a week. I'll bet they will be loose again.

Default Hmm

Well now I'm getting between 18-19 mpg? Only thing I'm doing different is driving faster. Staying between 70-75 on HWy and seems to be doing better?? Kinda weird actually.

Do you use both tanks? Your tanks may be crossfilling and if you don't use one then it may now be full of gas, preventing it from filling any more and then you would see your true mileage.

My rear tank doesn't work, fuel pump is off to it. Could it cross fill anyway? I was looking at my fuel gauge and the needle was just sitting there not really moving much. I turned the truck off watched it drop, back on, moved again. I thought the needle was stuck. So I filled it past the possible sticking point and it kept giving me about 18-19 mpg. Needle dips around corners etc so i think it works??Also the check engine light goes on and off every two minutes.

my 87 was getting 15 city and around 18 to 19 hwy with my foot in it. That was a great motor. 4.9 and a 4 spd od I dont think they get great MPG, my 91 302 auto truck drank the fuel, even with a tune up.
