Default Safari Roof Rack

Hey slackattack,
Are there 2 cross bars or 3? and are they all 60''?
I ask cuz I am going to build a roof rack/basket for my 2010 FX4 with a topper.
I mocked my cross bars up and it looks like the topper is a little wider in front? It may just be me but if you could measure your cross bars it would really help me out

Thank You

Default You Asked For It!...

Here is my Safari Rack a work in progress.....
It is 3/4 X 3/4 X .065 wall.
I still need expanded metal 1/2'' or 3/4'' not sure but deferentially flat, mounting brackets, light brackets, metal finish the corners and paint. I might put some supports in between the cross bars. I also have to mount the main cross braces to my Topper... This means drill holes in it
I will make the brackets tomorrow and maybe metal finish also. But I am going Overland camping this weekend so I wont have it ready. Dont want to rush it!!

Oh dang I almost forgot it is going on my 2010 FX4 with 88k miles

Thanks, Slackattack,
Yes, I have a bed JOJO but I also have it set up with a Bed Box with 2 draws. A lot of my camping and other gear are in them. When I go Overland Camping I need more room for some of the other necessities. I also sleep in there...
Yes, Slackattack I can stand on my tire but I will make this neat tire mount step!

Thanks

Default More Progress!!

It is hard to get a lot done when you work 10 hrs a day and have a house and are a single dad of two!! But it will get done!!

I like the way the supports came out! I still have a lot of little things left to do tho.

Let me know what you guys think...

Thanks

Default Safari Roof Rack

I am going to build a Safari Roof Rack for my 2010 FX4. It will mount on cross bars that will mount on top of the Fiberglass cap.
Pics will soon follow so check back soon.

Thanks

Here is an idea...instead of building one, look at Surco racks. They are decently priced and work very well. Had one on my 2001 Expy and it was approximately $180 for a 50x60 with custom mounts out the door.

Default Too Late

AK4wheeler I all ready started the project as a mater of fact it is in the wrong section 2004-2008 . The moderator is going to move it here. I hope he dose it soon!
I do like the racks from Surco. But its too late. Looking back I think I would still make my own. My is going to be unique to my needs and have some custom features I could not get with a off the shelf rack. Thanks for the sugestion.
