Default Home Made Front Bumper - pic heavy

Hi all, I decided that it might be a good idea to start this new thread for the front bumper do separate it from the rear bumper project. I'll see if I can move the photos and such to this thread.

Big BUMP...

Well, many moons later, I have finally decided on another project.

Can you guess what it is?

This will be a step-by-step posting of progress, so we'll go through the build together. -hoping to encourage others to build their own stuff.

heavydutytech_luke: not sure what you mean by "frame slotting".

All I know is, is that the OEM available mounting set up totally sucks! Everything bolts to the 2 bolt plates where the OEM tow hooks mount. TOTALLY unacceptable. Very little real integrity.

My design is going to sandwich the front of the frame with 3/8" steel plate, creating a "box" around the frame, and instead of just the bolt plates, the rearward bole will have a Gr.8 through-bolt (6" long) to add vertical integrity. Then a "strut" will be added to the bumper skin and reaches back to the top of that bolt so that I will have a true 4-point bumper/push guard.

The 3/8" steel plate will have a 4" x 4" x 1/4" spreader between them that will act as a cross member. This will also facilitate the carrier for a hitch receiver for the intended removable winch set up.

Sorry for the long delay... (I guess no one else is "busy", eh? ) I fabricated the frame mounting brackets and the receiver hitch cross member (for the removable winch). Also got to test fit the 10ga skin with the OEM bumper off, to see how I did with my silhouette quesstimations.

The anti-crush sleeve keeps the frame from getting deformed under 250 ft lbs of torque on the bolts

So, you've seen the preliminary outer skin shots. Now I have all the mounting brackets installed, as well as the "wind tunnel" for the intercooler. Now comes the fancy work to get all the angles to work together and look decent:

First piece of the tunnel surround

I'm looking forward to a non-rainy Friday to have a more progressive day.

Here's the result of todays dismal progress. I made a goof and so had to design a work-a-round. Then I goofed on the work-a-round. But what I am very pleased about, is the exposed gap and how even it is. This was my mental nemesis all along. It is hard mounted now, but it's only temporary while I add the rest of the bumper skin.
