Did you also make those cabinets in your kitchen?

I actually bought them at an unfinished furniture place. However, I do enjoy wood working. Maybe when I'm done with the corporate job I'll set up a decent wood shop and make furniture.

I want to do the same when I retire in May '18. Not so much as furniture making, but picture frames and scroll saw patterns.

May '18 is just around the corner! I'm at least 8 years out.

I got the door fitted to the cap today. I had some clearance issues with the tailgate and had to trim the back up a little bit. I also added bolt locks on the underside to lock the door in place. I'll likely add some sort of secondary lock as well. I'll fill the holes and gaps tomorrow and it looks like we'll be spraying it sometime between Wednesday and Friday of next week. One thing that is a little unnatural about this project is always remembering to leave an extra 1/8" of clearance anywhere that will be sprayed. Where two pieces come together that's an extra 1/4" which look huge. I'm not sure that all of my clearances are big enough and will have to go back over them to make sure.

It's nice to see some custom fabrication on this forum. Nice woodworking skills.

Are you going to spray the inside with bedliner also?

The plan is to spray the outside and bottom and wrap it up the inside a little bit and then my intention is to spray the inside with flat black paint to match the bed liner and to keep the weight down. I say "intention" because I'm really good at getting projects to 98% done. The last 2%... not so good.

I really want to be under 200 pounds and the lighter the better both for payload and taking it on and off. If it gets too heavy I can always take it off with the tractor. But it's much more convenient to be able to carry it off by hand an by myself.

Well it might be as early as the end of Jan now. I just got hit with Bells Palsy last week. The entire left side of my face is useless right now, can't even blink. The doctors say it could take from 6 weeks to 6 months to clear up. That after just getting over a sciatic nerve problem that I've had since September...I think someone is trying to tell me something, so before I don't even make it to May, I'm going to be calling in the retirement card early.

So far your cap looks awesome. Looks like you have enough head room in your garage that you could set up a pulley system to lift on and off the cap from the truck with easy.

Sorry to hear about your health problems. Better to retire a little earlier and get rid of that stress! Good idea about the pulley system to lift the cap off I think I'll do that. It really would be the quickest / easiest way.
