Default My take on the Gotts Mod

If this is on the wrong forum, feel free to fix it. Although I signed up a year ago, I'm just now figuring out how to post.

So after spending a lot of time here I decided to try to do the Gotts Mod on my '04 Lariat 5.4. Figured More air, and cleaner air certainly cant hurt, right. Especially since I put a new Ford motor in it just about 5000 miles ago (long story short, I got HOSED by the used car dealer I bought this from and had to replace the engine shortly after buying it)
Here was my first attempt. Following the DEstructions found here using 3" plumbing pipe and a rubber connector.

And how I handled the "thru the fender wall" part

I attached the 3" rubber connector to the 90* elbow and just squeezed the end with my fingers and pushed it into the air cleaner inlet. Fit great (or so I THOUGHT!.)

After several hundred miles it felt like the engine was starving for air, so I pulled the whole thing out and found THIS … yup, the rubber had actually squeezed in too tight and was restricting the air flow. This pic is AFTER it had relaxed and opened back up .

So I took a 2nd look at how to modify the actual Ford intake tube (with all those weird chambers) First thing I did was cut those 3 chambers off and using small pieces of aluminum I shaped them over each hole and riveted them to the tube. Then I went online and ordered an 18" X 39" sheet of heat-resistant-sound-deadening stuff and wrapped the tube in it. Finished it up with some HVAC aluminum tape to seal all the overlapping seams.

And here is MY final version of the Gotts Mod. Just finished it this morning and haven't even driven it yet, but it HAS to be better than that squished rubber connector.

Critiques, comments, and complaints welcomed.

Yes. looking at the last pic I posted, on the end closest to you..... where that oval shaped end goes into that black box. That black intake box is where the filter is. It's a flat filter that slides in just above the oval piece. You can see one of the clips to open it.
