Will the aluminum body panels corrode due to salt / brine?
There was discussion in the rust proofing thread wether the aluminum body will corrode due to salt or brine that is put on by the street department.
I know for sure that the frame components will develop rust if they are not treated, but I am uncertain about the body panels. You can look at a lot of Fords through the years that have aluminum body panels that have developed corrosion. It was real common in the 97 to 03 body style F150 that the hoods would develop corrosion at the front edge of the hood.
Are these new trucks better? Is it still worthwhile to spray Fluid Film or some type of metal protector into the areas like the door lips, tailgate edge, and hood edge?

Yes, I feel that it is frequent that the older aluminum bodies corroded. As mentioned, it was very common for the F-150s to have corrosion on the hoods. Also I remember the older Ford Expeditions had aluminum tailgates which did corrode.

The aluminum hood did on my 07. It wasn't bad but it was definitely showing signs of salt corrosion.

If you want some protection and piece of mind, undercoat it, or fluid film/rust check it yourself. I always have mine done every year, and just had my 2015 done yesterday....too many salted roads around here when winter hits.

Well, I took these pics last year while on a cruise. They are aluminum tour boats on the ocean, 365 days a year in salt water.
The big one is in Alaska, the small one in Victoria Harbor, BC.
I wonder if they are made from "military grade aluminum"?
