My XLT has adjustable pedals.

I have added tailgate dampener, lighted visors w/Homelink and tow mirrors that support BLIS. The only aftermarket thing was the tow mirrors (Trail Ridge from 1AAUTO).

For some, this is about money, or others, value, for others, personal preference. There is no right or wrong answer here. I bought and XLT because it was on the lot, had the payload I wanted, and was low enough to fit in the underground garage at work. Had it been a Lariat on the lot with HDPP instead of the XLT I probably would have bought that. Had both been on the lot with HDPP I would have bought the one I liked driving better. I keep trucks for a long time (14 years for previous truck) and I pay cash. It's just about function and livability for me. To each their own.

What XLT comes with the lighted visors and homelink. I literally have about every option you can get on an XLT and that was not offered in a package or standalone.

The reason I bought a Lariat over XLT was because I wanted Leather, 4A, LED lighting, and power-fold steps.

I use my vehicle for work and I do not have a spare (other than my Wife's explorer, who also needs her vehicle available daily). I don't have time to waste either installing aftermarket options or have it in a shop having said accessories installed. I wanted a vehicle I could drive off the lot and be ready to go.

XLT for me....extra $$$ available to add other things I do want (lighting upgrades mainly).

Why do you feel it's a waste of time? It's a hobby for some of us. Using your logic, if you do have a hobby, it has to be a waste of time.

Why spend the extra money for anything above an XLT?

Because life is short.....I have worked for the same company for 33 years, and before that I worked an additional 7 years in my youth. I deserve it.....As long as you can afford it and it doesn't take food out of your kids mouth, go for it. You cant take it with you.

In my case, I wanted the 4a, keyless start, real LED headlights/taillights (not a conversion bulb), BLIS, heated/cooled Leather seats, navigation, power deployable steps and the subwoofer system. I had to add the AMP steps, because they had none on the lot, but I could not get what I wanted in an XLT.

Also come on, who are we kidding, NONE of the trucks are worth the high amount that we pay nowadays anyway.

People buy what they want/need. I couldn't get a Lariat without leather unless it was custom, and I didn't want to wait. I got a loaded XLT with everything I needed and wanted. Lots of extras I didn't want, it's just a truck after all.


Could I afford a Lariat, Platinum or Limited? I paid off my 2015 in two years and my last payment was 10 months ago, so, yeah of course. But now it's just gas and insurance from here on out and I love not having a payment. I spend more on toys now, my boat, camper and cabin. My goal has been to be debt-free and retire by 43 and I'm well on track for that

Wow, strong is the snark in this thread... Im pretty sure it is a very personal decision for most. It is for me anyway.

Context, Just like rbraughn, I worked for the same company for over 33 years, my four kids are grown, and on their own. I still work (because I want to now, not because I have to). I saved aggressively throughout my career, and can afford any trim level I want. Last year I bought a boat... Some have criticized me for spending that much money on a toy. I just ignore them, and go have the fun I earned. I didnt NEED a boat, I didnt NEED all the features I put on it. I wanted it, pure and simple. I wasnt buying an object, I was buying the time on a lake with my family - which is the MOST important thing to me.

When it came to the truck... you guessed it, I bought and XLT. Why? As a tow vehicle for the boat, I wanted towing capacity, a bench seat for getting more people to the lake with me, a short bed that would fit in my garage, and a reliable truck that I can depend on (I didnt trust my 2000 SIlverado 2500 to go long distances with the boat). I actually did not want leather (wet swim suits not good for leather), or all the gadgets (that I have in my Audi) that could contribute to service (down time) because time on the lake in Colorado is precious. An XLT with a few well placed options is the BEST vehicle for my use. If I were pulling an RV across the country with long drive times, I would want the comfort and convenience of a higher trim level. If I were running a business and buying a fleet, I would want even less on the truck than I have now.

Maybe I am weird, but I dont understand envy of higher trim levels any more than I understand looking down on a lower trim level or the new vs used argument. Frankly, the ONLY reason I buy new is I that I am meticulous about care and maintenance, and I keep vehicles FOREVER (this truck is literally the 4th vehicle of my adult life). I often keep them 15 years or more, new pays off when I can keep them (and keep them running) that long.
