Some of us do it because we can, or like a good challenge. I'm sure others will chime as to why they do, or don't. This has been discussed before on here.

Because the base model XLT is $30K, then the jump from XLT to Lariat is ~ 15 grand, and the jump from Lariat to King Ranch is another 17 grand, then another few grand on top of that for Platinum, then another several grand for Limited...

I've owned my 99 XLT since 2000 (still have it), I owned a 2010 Lariat for five years, and now I own a 2016 Platinum.

1st Theroy - I think it's a financial hurdle and maybe its based in the uncertainty people feel. If you have a $500 payment you know you have a $500 payment for x years and if you have some extra during a month or can save up a couple of months of extra and do something to your truck then that's great. If something breaks or you need tires then that will probably be where the extra goes during that time period, but it's a buffer. If you have a $1000 payment you know you have a $1000 payment for x years and to a lot of people that means you won't have much extra for x years. If something breaks or you need tires then it means an even tighter period of time.

2nd Theroy - As the owner of a Platinum, it's unique because there aren't many of them. In my town I've seen a King Ranch, and some older Platinums, but I haven't seen another 2015/2016 Platinum yet. However, some people would rather buy a lower model and customize it.

I also own a 2006 Goldwing. A Goldwing is pretty much a Goldwing off the shelf, but I've spent thousands of dollars making mine look a little different than most other Goldwings, but some people don't do much to theirs. I see them for sale all the time.

Because some guys aren't rich like you and all we can afford is the XLT up front.

Then, as time passes and we come into a little cash, we can add just the things that we wish we had.

Also, getting factory installed equipment is sometimes a terrible financial decision. Towing packages are a great example. $800 for a hitch that you can buy for $150 on Amazon.com is not exactly a great choice. You can literally buy a trans. cooler, brake controller, and hitch yourself for far less than $800 or whatever the package sells for now days.

Because I don't want to spend $45k + on a lower trim Lariat when all I'd want from it is the leather and push button start. I'll spend $37k on a fully loaded XLT, and another $1500 in Katzkin leather which is better quality. I'm still ahead $6500 which I can use for wheels, tires, level/lift, etc... plus my payments would jump $150 a month more for the Lariat and I'm not comfortable with that.

Truck is utilitarian not status symbol. XL or XLT will work just as hard and long as platinum and I don't cry near as much when I scratch it. I have more brains than money but this is a no brainier.

People buy what they can afford. And if you finance the truck you're also paying interest. There's a lot of bells and whistles I don't need. Why spend 60k when 30k is all I need and can afford. Then when I can, I'll customize it to what I want for less money and no interest. It's that simple.
