Who uses Auto Start / Stop?
#11
I live in Manhattan and almost always drive in eco mode. When I am driving in heavy traffic, it seems that it starts and stops too often, so I just reach over and hit the switch. No big deal. When i am not in heavy traffic, I like it. Anything that will increase efficiency is fine with me. And I appreciate that I got a bigger battery and alternator with it.

As I was saying, uninformed.

My battery had to be replaced when I hit 8 years (car battery, not hybrid battery). And I've replaced the rear brakes. Also changed my oil, rotated my tires, and bought a new set of tires.

Auto stop/start on new Diesel?
There are a lot of very vocal haters of this technology. I can only assume that most of them are just Luddites and can't stand anything new or different.
I thought I'd dislike this technology, and that I would be finding a way to permanently disable it. It did take a little getting used to. I hardly notice it anymore, and almost never bother to turn it off. The only time I turn it off is when I know I'll only be stopping very briefly, as in bumper to bumper traffic.
When it does activate at a stop, releasing the brake pedal starts the engine before I can even move my foot to the accelerator. It's also very easy to just ease up on the brake pressure a couple seconds before you'll start moving again, and the engine is settled and idling when it's time to go. The vehicles using auto start/stop have heavy duty starters and batteries, and Ford's implementation strategy is very good.
This thread will no doubt spark another big debate about how ridiculous the feature is, along with lots of unsubstantiated conjecture about how it only saves pennies worth of fuel. But even if that was true, pennies add up; and across millions of vehicles, the fuel savings and reduction in emissions is substantial.
Honestly, I can find no reason to hate the AS/S system. It's never inconvenienced me in the slightest way.

I have a 2010 Ford Hybrid, purchased in late 2009. The engine constantly starts and stops, much more than an F-150 since mine starts and stops while driving. Nearly 80,000 miles. Lots of local driving where it's starting and stopping multiple times in an hour.
My battery had to be replaced when I hit 8 years (car battery, not hybrid battery). And I've replaced the rear brakes. Also changed my oil, rotated my tires, and bought a new set of tires.
