II'm curious as to thoughts and opinions in regards to what axle ratio to pair with the 5.0 V8?

If you weren't doing any heavy hauling, would the 3.31 squeeze a few more miles out of a galloon of gas?

I have 3.31s because I travel highway alot and carry only 3-400lbs of tools and gear most the time. I lock out 6th gear if tow. Sometimes I wish I got 3.55 but 3.31 work for me 90% of the time and i have 1" taller tires too.

I had 3.73s on my 08 F150 Fx4 and I towed alot then. Even unloaded I only got about 14-15 on highway compared to my 2015 which gets 21-22 mpg says the lie o meter.

I have 3.55 and on semi-flat straight roads I get 22-23mpg cruising at 62mph, per the lie-o-meter. 21-22 by hand.

I would have preferred 3.73, but I'm pretty happy with what I've got.

The 3.31 and 3.55 differentials are the smaller 8.8" while the 3.73 is the larger 9.75".

Absolutely garbage that Ford offers the little grocery getter rear end with the 5.0L, when it offered the larger 9.75" rear end on the lower powered 5.4L in 2009 and 2010 (had one) and the 3.5L Ecoboost in 2011 - 2017.

The 3.5L Ecoboost is good for those who don't mind turbo lag, a bit less reliability, and are excited about getting the most power out of a small displacement V6.

Myself, and several others, wish to do our towing without boosted or blown engines and having more capable rear ends in all ratios should be offered or standard.

Leave the little 8.8" differentials for the little and low powered 2.7L Ecoboost V6 and 3.5L Normally aspired V6 engines that weren't designed to tow anything heavy.

I get around 21 - 22 mpg expressway, and 18.5 - 19.5 mpg mixed with my 3.73 locker. Don't drive strictly town/city. Can't image doing any better than that with a 3.31 or 3.55 differential.

My experience with the 5.0 and the 3:55 in my 2012 would have me go 3:55 again. Great combo that had a lifetime lie o meter number of 19.3.

Do the 3.73 for the torque you are not getting so you don't get completely shamed by the ecoboost trucks.
