Loaded up on car detailing stuff at the local Kmart since it's going out of business, so I washed and waxed the truck today. Gotta love Texas weather in January. Used a wax and dry product from TurtleWax - we'll see how it holds up when this Texas weather changes (probably within the next day or so).

I could write pages on this, but it boils down to inflation, quality, and the complication of dealing with the new engine management systems. Inflation probably accounts for 50% of the increase. The quality is not just quality of components, but also the level of testing and how engine control is handled. Finally, the new "torque command" fly-by-wire engines with wideband controls and tivct systems and much more difficult to design around.
The results also are far in excess of what a $4000 kit can do. I nearly doubled my power, whereas the old kits typically added 30%, 50 at best and popped engines more often than desired.
Edit: you can do one for about $2k less than me, but you can expect maybe 525 rwhp rather than 593.

Yes the products are nicer, yes the power is more because you have a much better starting point and you are adding a better blower, but these prices ARE getting ridiculous.
Not to mention that no one who is serious runs a tune that comes with any of these things, so thats just money wasted on all fronts.
IMO, these kits should be in the 5500 ish range. Not the 7500+ range.
And i have to wonder... if the kits were 5k instead of 8k, how many more would be sold? Assuming that the market is very small, it may just make sense to sell 100 at 8k vs selling 120 at 5k.
(obviously fake numbers, but just using a 20% difference in sales. You would have to sell 160 units at 5k, just to break even with 100 units at 8k. Translates into 60%, have to sell 60% more units at 5k to break even. Probably doenst make sense to lower price because the market is so small, thus you have to pay to play)

With shipping, JohnECash stated he paid $44 under retail, but he is in Texas where the dealer is located. Mine are being shipped to northern New York and I paid $35 under retail shipped. I bought front and rear and that was the total discount. That's a good bit better than the 10% most retailers are offering (17.5% if my math is correct). Hope that helps!

so i touched on this in the roush thread, and basically got flamed. But yes and no. The kits are nicer, and materials costs have sky rocketed. However, the whole extra power thing is kind of bs. The reason you see higher gains and higher power is become of the MOTOR not the power adder. When you have a hoss of a motor like the 5.0, that can put down 400-430whp n/a (in a mustang), its going to respond ALOT better to the blower than some outdated motor that struggles to make 300whp n/a. If you stick a "new expensive blower" on one of these older motors, what do you think you will get?

If where $5k, I'd have one installed and warrantied. $10k, no thx

Personally, I'd rather have a blown XLT than a fully loaded Platinum (*IF power train warranty included). I'd rather sink my money in performance than tech/creature comforts. To each his own.

another part of the price problem... warranty.
Performance, especially a power adder, doesnt mix with warranty. And shouldnt. If you want a warrantied "hot rod", they have them.
