The next Ranger isn't due 'til '19... if I had to buy a mid-size truck, there's no question I'd jump all over a Chevy Colorado ZR2... it's offroad capability is astonishing. Folks are calling it a mini-Raptor. ...and I'm a Ford guy.
Many, many glowing reviews linked below. I feel dirty... (cuz again, I'm a Ford guy...)

I would get a regular cab short bed F150 and put on a nice topper.

Personally, the new Tacoma TRD Off-road or Pro would be my choice. Just live the looks and off road capabilities.
Someone mentioned a Nissan Frontier. I recently drove a new Pro-4X Frontier. ..didn't seem much different than my old '88 Hardbody! Not a bad truck, just a dated design.

I owned a Turd gen Tacoma (2016) for 6 months before trading it in on my current F150. It was absolute garbage! New V-6 and transmission are a horrible combo. Way underpowered, very shift happy. In 6 months of ownership, it had 9 service department visits. I had to drive a Toyota rental on four different occasions. It had new issues when I traded it in. I was tired of spending my free time at the toyota dealership. Just my $.02

I'd think about a used Dakota with the V8. I'm sure the price of those things have plummeted by now.

Colorado or Canyon both kill the Tacoma. The Tacoma is an old truck, not much more advanced than it's 10 year old predecessor. Bro factor and off-road prowess are all it's got going for it. Read Car & Driver comparisons of the two if you want some honest insight.
Disclaimer: I owned an '09 Tacoma and loved it, but Toyota has gotten complacent serving us old, tired designs that are underpowered and inefficient. The innovation is gone.
