My 2017 has the 3.73 e-locker but it has the 8.8" rear end, so I think the previous comment that more expensive towing and payload packages determine the rear end is probably correct.

Yet, I don't have added payload or towing packages.... So perhaps it is determined by the vehicles overall GVWR? Once it goes above a certain weight, automatically get the 9.75? Im guessing again...

I have the 5.0 with 3.55 and eld. Mine came with the hd 8.8. My truck also has the factory tow package with factory brake controller. My tow rating is a little over 9k and payload is like 1996 lbs or something. Just a tick under 2k.

My '17 5.0 has the 53A tow package and came with 3.73's in the 9.75 locker. GMC lost me as a buyer because they no longer offer 3.73's in their 1/2 ton trucks.

Does the extra towing package upgrade to the bigger rear-end? I have the standard rear-end(3.31, no e-lock) but with the optional towing package(picking up tomorrow, so didn't really pay that much attention yesterday at dealership).

That is what we are trying to figure out. Let us know what you have on that configuration when you find out.

while one may be stronger than the other, there are no reports of failures on either gear set. so I wouldn't worry about it. you could tow max all day everyday and likley have same life from either pumpkin

NO doubt. The 8.8's have been around for a long long time. Obviously I'm sure some changes have been made over the years, but they are pretty much bullet proof.
