Hi folks, Hoping to be a new 2018 F-150 owner shortly. Trying to educate myself here on what I need. Looking at Lariat - 4*4 S-CREW. As I continue to read, I may find my answer, but my question to you all is what Engine do I need / makes most sense for me. Trying to find various models to test drive - but they are scarce at the moment at dealers around me
98% highway driving. Odd towing here and there, Wood chipper here and there , ATV to go quadding etc.
Speaking of want Vs. need, my only want is that it's got some pep to it on day to day highway driving. My other truck is an old Tundra ('04 4.7) and also Audi A4 Stick, so with the Audi I am used to pretty good acceleration - not expecting the truck will match the Audi tho!
Whats my best option? 2.7 or 3.5? I figure from reading here the 5.0 might be more suited to heavier towing. Would the Diesel be a waste of money? There is one dealer close by that has one on the lot that I am trying to check out this weekend
There are a lot of factors to consider. If you plan on keeping the truck 125+ miles, I would go 5.0 for reliability of course it’s not as quick as 3.5 ecoboost. I have coworkers that have had to replace turbos on there lariats around 140k. I’d like to try the little power stoke but they don’t come in an xlt. 302a. Plus I want to give them a couple of years before I buy one. I’d say test drive them all. But I would lean toward the 5.0 with 3.73 gearing or 3.55 at the minimum my .02 cents. Good luck
As far as pep....either of those trucks may be quicker or a tad slower to 60mph...depending exactly which A4 you have.
Actually, according to these results, the trucks are quicker unless you have a Quattro...
PSD only makes sense if you're planning to drive a ****-ton of miles. Like 200K+ for break-even. It's slow, expensive to buy, expensive to fuel, and expensive to maintain. And it's only available in certain trims.
3.5 EB is a towing monster and the best for the zoom-zoom.
2.7 EB is a very capable motor, but not available on all trims (KR/Plat/Limited)
5.0 is the motor for the guys who must have that V8 rumble... unless you want to go totally nuts and slap a Whipple on top. Then, you have ludicrous speed. The 5.0 is no slouch towing but, stock, the 3.5EB is the tow king.
As far as equalling your Audi... the 3.5 EB will come close, at least up to 100MPH or so. Drop a 93 octane tune in it and it will probably outrun the Audi in the quarter.
The only way to know for sure is to go drive them. I had a 2016 3.5EB and currently have a 2018 F150 3.5EB and a 2017 Explorer Sport 3.5EB... so you know where I fall.

You just don't want anyone knocking your 5.SLOW, do you?
All of the above... the 2.7eco, 3.5eco, and 5.0 will all handle what you listed with ease, and all have pep. If you think you will go crazy with towing, the 3.5eco is the big boy as has been mentioned, but the 5.0 can handle a lot as well. The 2.7eco isn't as suited for heavy loads / large trailers as it's not designed to shed as much heat as the other two, so skip it if you want to tow a 27ft travel trailer or 7k loads up long mountain passes. Other than that, all three as similar in how 'fast' they get to speed without a load.

I think we need to know what is the maximum you'll ever need to tow first, but you sound like a candidate for a 2.7.

Really can't answer that honestly because I generally don't tow. I'll take my quad here and there and primarily will use it around the house for property maintenance type work. Certainly looking like the 2.7 would be sufficient
