It took me three years to research a viable solution for the OP. Install a hose clamp around the bottle, insert 4 small key rings evenly spaced around the clamp, connect 4 bungee cords to the front grab handles, back coat hangers and key rings. The bottle floats in the middle of the truck accessible to all passengers. Each passenger can grab, pull, drink and the bungee will return it to the center of the truck for the next person.

The original cup holders in my 99 Super Duty Supercab were cup throwers. Didn't work for s**t. Wound up replacing them with the newer design that went into the 2000 Super Duty, which worked well. So, it's not the first time that Ford screwed up a cup holder design.
The cup holders work well with my 30oz Yeti. They don't hold water bottles well as they tend to flop around. Ford could have incorporated spring loaded fingers to provide a wider range of adjustment to accommodate bottles like gatorade and powerade.

I usually keep 2-3 16-20oz water bottles in the truck and just put some koozies on 'em. They fit snug in the cup holders so not rattling. Never have to stop for something to drink now.
