Your ins co. tells you your rate won't go up, true but in the next breath your claim free discount disappears. Same rate just more money.

Was it an "act of God?" Or did you try to do a slam dunk and didn't plan out?

Jk...anyways, if you go with insurance, hope they don't give you hell like "you shoulda concrete it into the ground or should have added more sand/water to weigh it down." Maybe the post or hoop just rusted off.

We need pics. Insurance will need it anyways, should you go that route.

Damn - a thousand apologies for the cardinal sin of posting without enough detail and/or pics.

Like swimming with the sharks here

My insurance deductible is $1k, (purposefully). I don't mind filing a claim....now that I'm insuring 2 teen drivers - I could use a little payback. I'm sure it will go up - you just have to shop around every couple of years.

I asked the question because if it's close to $1k, then I will just pay out of pocket.

this is from a weighted bottom basketball hoop that fell over - the side of the backboard hit the top of the tailgate.

here are the pics:

PDR may be able to get that ding out from the tailgate. As for the plastic piece up top, I wouldn't sweat that. Those things are there to take on scratches when sliding things over the tailgate. All my trucks have battle scars

The damage isn't too bad, so you should be able to sell it and recover some of your cost.

I was rear ended by a non insured driver who was at fault and so my insurance company had to pay the claim from my uninsured motorists coverage. I noticed my policy increased the following renewal and I was pissed until I compared the details of the renewal and my previous policy. I found that my new car discount had gone away on one of my cars and that accounted for the difference.

A competent aluminum certified body shop can repair, replace top cap and trim and paint for a lot less than even a used tail gate if you could even find one.
