Default Truck hard to start after getting hot and sitting 2-3 hours

Hey guys,

I have a 2016 f150 with a 5.0, 78,000 miles.

The past month or so the truck has been giving me trouble starting after getting hot and being allowed to rest for 2-3 hours. It takes longer to turn over, and also when it starts it sputters for 2-3 seconds and then runs like nothing is wrong with is. I’ll also add that when the truck sits over night and gets cold it gives me zero issues starting

I do not have any CEL’s, the local shop I took it to and picked it up from today replaced a purge valve, but once I got home from the shop and walked outside to start it 2 hours later the problem still persists. I have a new battery, the alternator was checked, the starter is still working.. really at a loss at what to do next.

I was thinking of maybe changing the spark plugs, although it seems premature to do so. I am searching for suggestions or people who have had similar problems before taking it to the dealer tomorrow.

Sounds like a fuel pump issue to me.
Almost like it loses its prime and needs to get the fuel back up.

I like this. Had the same problem with my previous 2015 with 5.0. It was the fuel pump.

thanks for the feed back. The shop I took it to said the fuel pressure was OK. Why would it not have a rich or lean code? I haven’t had any problems towing my 6000lb pressure washing trailer or any MPG issues.

can you tell me exactly what you experienced regarding this issue? Trying to get a good grasp on things before installing a new fuel pump.

Do a search under my name....there are a few threads that were open over time that I tried posting some good info in.

Common-enough in the early 5.0s. May want to search “extended crank”

Mine was a combo cam phaser / fuel pump issue. Same thing you experienced: would sometimes do extended cranking on “warm” starts.....and once started would sputter 2-3 seconds.

we replaced the spark plugs at 105,000. It did not help at all.
also replaced all fluids the same time.

it gets hot, sits for 45 mins-4 or 5 hours and continues to have an extended crank over time.

we replaced the #3 cylinder ignition coil.

it runs flawlessly, idles great, and continues to get 20+ MPG on the highway. I guess it’s just one of
those things I’ll never figure out until it leaves me stranded. Lol.

We had 2013 F450 V10 in shop last week, didn't have crankissue but rather stumbled under load. Fuel pressure was fine...fuel VOLUME was low. Replaced fuel pump, problem solved!
