Default Transmission whine - whistle sound

I know there have been various threads on this topic, but until now I could not find any previous TSBs indicating the 10 speed transmission noise (i.e. whine / whistle) had a fix that could be applied.

Recently I came across a TSB on a Raptor forum. The TSB 20-2083 seems to be specifically for the 10R80 transmissions, but only for those built Oct 2019 to Dec 2019.

My 2019 F-150 5.0L was built Aug 2019. I purchased it new in Jan 2020 and only have 2,500 miles on the truck. The whistle / whine noise is starting to become an annoyance whenever I drive, although the noise dissipates when my truck is traveling a speeds above 25MPH. Maybe it’s still there, but wind noise may cover up the transmission sound at higher speeds??

Anyway, I’m wondering if those of us with 2019 and later years can get this TSB applied??

TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 20-2083

• Customer concern of high-pitched whine noise coming from transmission
10R80 Transmission – High-Pitched Whine Noise - Built On 21-Oct-2019 And Through 16-Dec-2019

Model:

Ford
2020 F-150 Transmission/Transaxle: (10R80)
2020 Mustang Transmission/Transaxle: (10R80)
2020 Ranger Transmission/Transaxle: (10R80)

Issue: Some 2020 F-150/Mustang/Ranger vehicles equipped with a 10R80 transmission and built on 21-Oct-2019 and through 16-Dec-2019 may exhibit a high-pitched whine noise coming from the transmission at low speeds during light acceleration or coasting. This may be due to the outer output shaft bearing. To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure steps to replace the transmission inner output shaft bearing, fluid passage sleeve and outer output shaft bearing.

Action: Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition on vehicles that meet all of the following criteria:

• 2020 F-150/Mustang/Ranger

• Vehicles built on 21-Oct-2019 and through 16-Dec-2019

My 2019 does this also. It seems to do it first through third gear. I will agree, it’s annoying. I’ll have to check my build date.

EDIT: My build date it 05/2019

Mine 2019 whines the worst when it's below 20 degrees on a cold start other than that the whine is fairly quite after it warms up for a few minutes!!

For me, when I first start my truck, It’s negligible. However, once warmed up the whine / whistle is there...

I've got a 2018 with 33k miles, and it has had this whine at low speeds/gears since new. Does it pretty consistently below about 25, mainly when shifting from 1st or 2nd gear up to the next gear.

As long as mine does not get worse or impacts the transmission functionally, I may just see how things go. I really don’t want a Ford mechanic to open up my transmission if it doesn’t need to be done. Just really stinks to pay $65k for a truck and have to hear this annoying whine/whistle noise. The above TSB for the 2020’s says to replace the transmission inner output shaft bearing, fluid passage sleeve and outer output shaft bearing.

Yeah, I agree. After researching it on the forum, I decided to let it go, at least until near the end of the warranty anyway, as they do not have a TSB for the older models for this issue, that I am aware of. Mine was built in September 2017, so a fairly early production model for a 2018 I guess. It hasn't impacted the performance so far, but I do wonder about long term durability. There are some threads here that address it, and some guys have had the transmissions torn into, but I do not think it was a consistent issue that was being fixed.

Default Transmission whine from new

My 2020 5.0 sounded like it had a Turbo whine at idle. I currently have 1,300 miles on it and still no change. I’m assuming this is just a characteristic of the 10 speed. Should I be concerned...?

The sound mine has is a whistle at low speeds between 2nd and 3rd I believe or going from first into 2nd. Can you make a video/sound recording of the noise? That description sounds different than mine and the others I read about.
