Default Tow Mirrors Auto Fold Mod - With Pictures

For you folks who might be a bit worried about taking your truck apart for this mod, I have a few pictures and hints / suggestions that might make it a bit easier. To start with, you will need to remove the trim piece on the door to access the wiring connector.

There are two small clips at the bottom that snap into the plastic door panel. Mine were pretty stubborn and I had to pull pretty hard to get them to pop out.

This is what you have once it is free.

The door wiring connector looks like this. There is a release tab that you push towards the body of the connector to unlock the wiring harness. Then pull straight out. The connector should come out very easily.

Once you have the connector unplugged you need to remove the red cap. It is easy – the outside edge just needs to be flexed enough to slide away from the connector. Go easy so you don’t break it – it is thin plastic.

Now you need to remove Pins 18 & 19 and swap their positions. If you look at the back of the connector you will see small numbers in the corners. 1, 11, 12, 22

You will need a small flat blade to release the pin from the connector body. Looking at the connector from the side, this is what it looks like inside one of the channels that separates the pins: (Sorry about the 1st grader drawing)

If you push the wire forward until the pin hits the end of the connector, it leaves a slight gap between the release tab and the pin body. Put your small flat blade in and gently push the release tab up towards the connector body. While holding the release tab up, gently pull the pin out by the wire. It should slide out easily. If not, remove your flat blade and start again. Once you get the 1st one, the others are easy.

Once all that is done, you need to use FORScan to make the following changes to your DDM and PDM.

DDM / PDM Modules:

740-03-01 x8xx xx
740-12-01 Fxxx

741-03-01 x8xx xx
741-12-01 Fxxx

How it functions:

In my truck, if I lock the doors with the keyfob, keypad or by touching the door handle once it is closed, the mirrors automatically fold.

If I lock the doors by pressing the lock button on the inside of the door, the mirrors do not fold.

If I use the remote start app or the keyfob to remote start the truck and the mirrors are folded, they stay folded until I open the door.

If I unlock the truck with the keyfob, keypad or by pulling the door handle, the mirrors unfold.

If I unlock the truck using the remote app the mirrors unfold. However, if you don't open the door and you have enabled Relock with FORScan, the doors relock after 45 seconds and the mirrors fold in again.

If I fold the mirrors manually using the switch inside the cab, the auto unfold will not function until you unfold the mirrors using the switch in the cab again.

Great write up! I haven't decided if I'm going to do this or not.

Are there any changes button wise when you fold the mirrors from the panel?

Excellent write up!

I did this last week, my recommendation is to get this kit and use the smallest screwdriver to release the tab. Pretty cheap @ $7. When sticking the screwdriver above the pin to release it, try to angle it at a downward angle as much as possible and pry slightly upward when it bottoms out. While holding it, pull the pin out.

Thanks !! (Use the thanks button !!)

It's funny you ask about the button functionality. Some have reported that they have to push the Up arrow to fold in and the Down arrow to fold out. My truck is weird I guess - I can push either button and they will toggle from wherever they currently are.

In other words, I can hit the Down arrow and they will fold and I can hit the Down arrow again and they will unfold. Same with the Up arrow.

I don't know if it was always like that - I never tried it before ??

I also like how I can fold them inside the truck and it cancels out the autofold until I unfold them inside the truck again. I back into my garage and I have to fold my mirrors to fit and I don't want them unnecessarily operating while my truck is in the garage.

It's intuitive, like it was supposed to be there from the factory.

Sorry if this seems like a dumb question, but do you insert the small flat tip from the front or back?

From the front - see my 1st grader drawing... Although, now that I am looking at the connector, I'm wondering if the little slot from the back would allow for easier removal ??

Gotcha. Thanks!

That's why I asked. Looks easier from the back, but don't know if there's enough room for both the wire and the screw driver.

That makes me wish I had folding mirrors on my XLT.
