Default Tips for hammering out a dent?

A tree recently hit my truck as I was backing up and bent the bumper in a bit plus made a dent in the tailgate. Lucky for me I can very easily get to the back of the dent because of where its located. I was going to use a block of wood or square piece of pvc and a hammer to make it look a little better. Does anyone have any tips or tricks for this? Thanks in advance!

take it to a body shop IMO. That paint is already cracked and if you go banging on it, you will only make it worse.

Definitely take that to a body shop. That is a sharp dent on an edge. That's going to be a tough one to get out.

Shop for sure, thats a nasty dent. Ive seen way worse repaired on youtube so there may be a chance but only if you dont make it worse.

a tree hit your bumper? Those damn things used to be rooted to the ground. Guess they've sprouted legs! Crap.
We're all in trouble.

Easy to rework aluminum. Just have to stress relieve with heat from time to time so that it doesn't crack. Check youtube for how to anneal aluminum with a torch. You will be able to feel when it needs a repeat.

If you do what you're saying... you will destroy it.
