Default Tailgate wont unlock/open

Long story short I found a guy and traded my non-step gate for his step gate. Swap went great, everything worked for 2 days just fine.

Today I go to open my tailgate and it won't open. So I go back hit the unlock button and try again won't open. So I go back shut off the truck and try to use the fob....

I hear a small click not the usual "clunk" of the lock releasing. But it still won't unlocks.

When I "Lock" it I also actuated but the locking noise is pretty quiet.

I have unplugged and replugged, pulled, pushed and cursed. To top it off I have my access cover closed and cannot get to the tailgate internals.

Ideas?

The truck is out of warranty, has extended but I want to try and solve first.

Is the click coming from inside the truck like it is a relay or at the tailgate? If at the tailgate, you are going to have to open it up and see what is wrong.

From the tailgate.
How do I open it up without ruining my bed cover?

I take it you mean a spray on bed liner. Just my guess would be to get a razor and cut along the edge of the access panel. Some places spray over hardware, if yours is done this way then you have that to contend with. Others might jump in with other suggestions such as peeling it all off the tailgate, making repairs and then having it resprayed.

No, I don't mean bed liner.

My "Access Brand" Tonneau Cover is closed and I cannot get inside the bed to take off the tailgate access panel.

Contact access or wait and see if another member can help with opening it with tailgate locked.

So, it's been 3 hours since I noticed it. I went out to the truck and it unlocked. WTF?

So... I rolled up my tonnuea cover in case it wouldn't unlock again. Now it won't lock. lol

At least I can get at the internals now and get it diagnosed.

Not sure if the latch can be adjusted but it sounds like it's binding somewhere. Check to see if it is and adjust it and I would also open up the panel and put a little triflow/lubricant in the mechanism to see if that helps.

So I took the actuator out and apart to see if the gears were stripped. Gears are fine.

I install the actuator without the cover and it works like a dream. So I was thinking maybe it jumped time or something.

Installed the cover on the actuator and I'm back to square one. It's a mind F#@k too cause the cover does no more than my finger in the video.

For some reason I cannot find the part number for the actuator.
