If you get a sawhorse, you can just pull the passenger side of the tail gate away far enough to get this done. If you are by yourself, this tail gate is heavy and bulky. It doesn't have to come off.

I installed the ford factory one and it works well; and is hidden behind the tail light. If you do as ChiefD described above it is pretty easy.

I am assuming you are in Canada, i order mine from https://www.eastgatefordpartscanada.ca/ as it was the cheapest place i found (local dealers pricing was outrageous). Also, order the two pieces separately; as it is much cheaper!

I installed mine right after I bought my truck. It seriously took 10 minutes tops. It works exactly as advertised.

My only recommendation with the Dee Zee is to paint the bracket black before you install it. It really does make a difference.

I have the Dee Zee, it works. No removing anything but a couple of bolts for the hinge and the post..

This. A sawhorse and a towel, the tailgate comes off on one side, tail light lens off, install, reassemble. Like 20 or 30 minutes. Ford OEM

I did the sawhorse method for the Ford one too. I like the Ford one better because it's hidden behind the taillight and it doesn't need to be removed if you want to take the tailgate off.

I prefer the Ford OEM to the DeeZee. I prefer having the strut inside the fender where it is protected and out of the way. Also, you don't have to drill any holes. You don't have to "remove" the tailgate, but you do have to unhook the passenger side and swing it out of the way. You can support it with a stool or something that is the correct size. You do have to remove the tail light on that side.
