I've never used this but I like this concept to carry a bike in the bed quickly and without scratching anything.

If you were to buy the parts I used for my setup, it wold probably cost you about $30. Most of it I had laying around.

I bought a Dakine bike pad (large) to go across the back of the tailgate. Works like a champ, no issues. Have a hitch rack, too, but never use it. The bike pad takes about 2' to route under the tailgate and tie off. I use the bike pad for a 29er MTB. Nice to have the velcro loops on the top to keep the bike up, unlike a towel or something.

That's why the bikes in the pic I posted are facing different directions. Just make sure the side with the chain is facing towards the inside of the bed so nothing gets squished up against the bed wall.

Bringing this thread back from the dead. Anyone find a good quality padded tailgate cover, that fits our curved tailgate, and allows access to the handle and camera?

I have the Dakine and it fits fine, the only problem is the camera -- it's blocked. I can work around it by 'rotating' the pad forward, but that puts it in a position that the manufacturer did not design it for. It ends up looking like a bit of a hack job, but it works.

I just checked the Dakine web site and they now list a 'DLX' pickup pad that looks like it's updated for trucks like ours, so that would probably be the way to go.

Anyone want to buy a moderately used Dakine 'non-DLX' pickup pad?

I saw on Pinkbike or MTBR that the big companies (Thule, Yakima, maybe Dakine or Race Face) brought new versions of their tailgate pads to the fall bike shows. I bet they will be available in the spring. If you have the bed space and are willing to keep the tailgate pad on all the time, they are the easiest and fastest way to hold 2-4 bikes, and way cheaper than hitch racks. I think some of the newer ones have a velcro flap over the tailgate handle which would let the camera work, provided there isn't a bike in the way as well. I would have bought one but I have a tonneau cover and often have stuff in the bed.

I have the Evoc one - I used to have the Dakine one, but as was mentioned above, it was hard to see out the rearview camera. The Evoc has a large enough velcro door that I've opened and have no problems seeing out the backup camera now. The new Dakine one has a large door that should accommodate any rearview camera.

Works great - I've had up to 6 bikes on there (though that's a tight fit).
