Supercrew 6.6 box?

My previous use of two 4X4 XLT Screw short-beds (5.5') has included overnight desert 'geology & stargazing' campouts in desert (i.e. rattlesnake infested) locales. I learned early that sleeping on the ground, especially near water sources, was not prudent. So, with a hard tonneau installed and an inflatable mattress/sleeping bag in the bed, I was safe, comfortable, and well rested at sunrise. Even at 6' 1" height, there were no issues with the short bed (most people sleep in the fetal position) and when it rained the tonneau diverted the water to keep me bone dry...deep sleep was enhanced by the sound of the rain on the 'roof'. I have no need of a longer bed even when carrying plywood and other dimensional materials.

I think the 5.5 bed is so much more popular because there is a large segment of truck buyers that are buying to just have the truck. They care more about the cab than the bed. 5.5 ft is plenty for them to throw ice chests, boots, chairs, etc. into.
I wanted the 6.5ft bed. Actually that is why I drive a Ford now (Chevy guy), as they were the only ones with the crew cab and 6.5 bed. I also think its looks better on the screw with the 6.5 ft bed. I've had numerous occasions were that extra foot of bed space came in handy (I have a tool box too) so I could close my tailgate. It's also nice for my dogbox (so I have plenty of room for my other hunting items) and kayak (again that extra foot makes a difference!) Its just more "utilitarian" to have the longer box to me, but again, that is my opinion and what I like.
Actually, since the new Silverados/Sierra have the 6.5 ft bed on the crew cab now, I've started to see quite a few more 6.5 bed on crew cab trucks. Fords included. They really don't advertise them, so most people don't know they exist.

I suppose a 5.5 bed is not quite useless to those that use a truck as a truck but it's got to be darn close. I curse my 6'7" "long bed" whenever I'm hauling construction materials and I've long since removed the tool box it came with. If an 8' bed was available in an extended/supercab half-ton, that would be what I would buy.
