Default Strange dent on my tailgate

I noticed this dent on my truck and I can't imagine how the heck something like this would happen. I've never let the tailgate hit anything while lowering it. It's a truck and not a show car, so the dent doesn't bother me, I'm more puzzled than anything. Anyone else see something like this?

It looks like someone took a pin punch to it because nothing else it scratched and theres no other dent. So the only logical explanation is ninja trolls.

Was it from someone prying the plastic handle and surround from out of the face tailgate skin?

Looks suspiciously like a flat head screwdriver indent when your trying to pry something out.

Hard to tell but looks like it was painted over. Maybe it came from the factory like that?

I work and park close to downtown Santa Cruz, which is filled with homeless people who are constantly breaking into vehicles so that could be it.

It wasn't there when I bought it because I've detailed it a few times since owning it. It does look weird since it looks like not much of the paint came off.

My guess is that someone hit it with something in a parking lot (probably by accident) and didn’t want to stick around to pay for it.

My money is on a theft attempt. If you're in a high-risk area, you should consider adding hose clamps to the tailgate pivot points (or a commercial solution like the Jimmi Jammer) as an extra line of defense.
