So I was lied to by my salesman

so originally I was going to buy a 2015 f150 xlt black 4x4 with the 3.5 echo boost, just like the one I have now but when I went to buy it they couldn’t find the key to it so the salesman said I have another just like it but half the miles and only a grand more and I asked him if it had the same engine because that’s the engine I wanted and he said yes. So today when I went to a dealership here in town to get another key made for it because I only got one when I bought it and when I was finished they gave me a receipt with all the information about the truck (year, model, and all that) I looked at the part where it says engine and it said 2.7l. I talked to the guy who sold it to me and said there’s nothing they can do because they don’t have the title anymore.

Yep he lied, but you should have at least raised the hood and verified the engine.

Sorry for your bad luck, but, it's on you to verify what you're getting. Pulling the vehicle's window sticker by VIN would tell you exactly how it was configured. Looking under the hood would tell you what engine it had.

Sadly, salespeople are, in too many cases, liars.

If you have something *in writing* stating it's a 3.5EB truck and you never signed anything that said it was a 2.7, you might have a case. Otherwise, you're SOL. Good news is, unless you're towing ludicrously heavy, the 2.7 is a pretty stout motor.

Honestly, almost every car salesman I have ever dealt with has been completely clueless. That is only compounded with used cars considering the cars may be different brands their dealer isnt familiar with. So I doubt he did it on purpose. He probably saw the badges on it and thought "EcoBoost = EcoBoost." Can you ask them if you can trade it on on a different truck and they simplu give you trade in value equal to your purchase price? They still get to sell a truck off their lot and you get the truck you want. Win win for both parties.

My guess is the salesman probably had no clue it had the 2.7 instead of the 3.5. Salesman simply want to sell and will say almost anything to make the sale. Fortunately unless you plan on towing a significant amount of weight the 2.7 might be a better long term choice. I would have gotten the 2.7 if I didn't need the extra towing power. Seems like most owners of the 2.7 have nothing but good things to say about it.

Bottom line I understand it's extremely annoying to not get exactly what you thought you were buying. Not sure if there is much of price difference between the 2.7 and 3.5 but I would look into it. Perhaps you are due some money back because the truck has a different engine then you were promised.

Actually the price of the two engines are close to the same (at least in 2015), but the 2.7 was 795.00 more than the 3.5

OP, unless you have paperwork that says 3.5, this is on you. Easily verified before buying.

Caveat Emptor.

You should have popped the hood.

I believe it was $795.00 more for the non turbo 3.5... not the 3.5 eco boost.

This quote came from Consumer Reports in April 2015 - "The 2.7 isn’t the base engine in the F-150 lineup—that would be a non-turbo 3.5 V6. But it’s only a $795 price bump to opt for the wee turbo." On my window sticker it shows a 795.00 upcharge for the 2.7

Edit: cthusker, I stand corrected. I found a 2015 3.5eb window sticker & they had a 1995.00 upcharge, so they were indeed higher
